Profile of the Program

The Ph.D. in English Language Education aims to develop scholars with deep expertise in English language teaching, capable of conducting original and interdisciplinary research. The program equips students with both theoretical foundations and advanced analytical skills necessary to contribute to the field through innovation, critical inquiry, and scholarly leadership. The program focuses on areas such as second language acquisition, bilingualism, language education technologies, assessment, curriculum design, intercultural communication, and education policy. It prepares graduates to produce original knowledge and take on academic roles in higher education institutions.

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of English Language Education

Specific Admission Requirements

In order to apply to the doctoral program, candidates must have a thesis-based master's degree and must have an ALES score of no less than 55 points in the score type of the program they are applying for, as determined by the Institute Board recommendation and Senate decision. In addition to the ALES score, a written scientific assessment exam and/or an additional interview result and a master's grade point average may also be evaluated for the acceptance of those who will apply to the doctoral program. Matters related to this evaluation, application conditions and other matters regarding student admission are announced to candidates through appropriate means upon the recommendation of the Institute Board of Directors and the rules determined by the Senate.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Ph.D. in ELT.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who will continue their education at Bahçeşehir University may be exempted from the courses they took at their previous educational institution within the framework of certain regulations. If the content of the course taken is compatible with the content of the course given at BAU and is approved by the institute directorate, the student may be exempted from this course.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates can work as academics, researchers, or lecturers in universities; serve as specialists in organizations involved in language education policy development; and take positions in curriculum development, assessment, and teacher education.

Access to Further Studies

Students who successfully complete the program can apply for post-doctoral studies according to their areas of expertise.

2 Establishes holistic theoretical connections among disciplines related to language education (linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, etc.).
3 Produces interdisciplinary knowledge and formulates new research questions in early and multilingual bilingualism.
4 Designs and conducts original academic research using qualitative and quantitative research methods in the context of English teaching.
5 Integrates educational technologies with pedagogical approaches to develop innovative teaching materials and methods.
6 Evaluates and improves classroom practices based on second language acquisition and foreign language teaching theories.
7 Designs effective language teaching strategies for different age groups, offering practices that consider cultural and social diversity.
8 Conducts critical discourse analysis addressing gender, identity, culture, and power relations in language teaching.
9 Communicates effectively in multicultural and multilingual environments, offering educational solutions with intercultural awareness.
10 Possesses in-depth knowledge of language testing and assessment systems; develops tools based on validity, reliability, and testing theories.
11 Presents at national and international scientific meetings and publishes research in accordance with academic ethics.
12 Produces original academic work that contributes to theoretical knowledge in the field.
13 Demonstrates academic leadership and develops projects to address current issues in the field.
14 Evaluates the social functions of English language education with a sense of social contribution and proposes solution-oriented policies.
15 Thinks critically using advanced cognitive skills and proposes innovative instructional approaches and creative solutions.
