Course Objectives:

The purpose of the course is to introduce political science and international relations students to the main topics, sources, subjects and issues of the international law. The course covers a variety of topics in international law from sources, actors, subjects, areas and institutions of international law to the use of force and human rights. After explaining the main concepts, definitions, sources and development of international law, it discusses how the international law differs from domestic law, analyzes the founding elements and institutions of the international law. The state, as the main actor in international relations and law, and the related topics of international law about states, will take a detailed focus throughout the course. In addition, other major topics of international law will also be included in the course, such as treaty law, human rights law, law of seas, law of air space and space law, the UN, the use of force, settlement of international disputes, peaceful and diplomatic means in international law

Course Content:

The history of international law; sources of international law; the law of treaties; states and recognition in international law; the UN; law of the seas, use of force in international law; human rights law.
