Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the structures of various construction materials used in civil engineering applications and to tell the relationships between these properties and their areas of application. In this context, fundamental knowledge is given mainly on concrete, and also clay products, building stones, mineral aggregates, lime, gypsum, bituminuous materials, timber and polymers and also limitations in the usabilities of these materials are mentioned.


Course Content: Introduction to materials of construction. Concrete. Masonry. Glass in construction. Metals in constructions. Timber. Polymers in construction. Bituminuous materials.

2) CONCRETE- Describe the hydration process of cement. Introduce chemical and mineral admixtures.
3) CONCRETE- Describe properties and role of aggregates in concrete. Fresh and early age properties of concrete.
4) CONCRETE- Fundamentals of deformation of concrete. Basics of stress-strain behavior. Fundamentals of strength and failure of concrete.
5) CONCRETE- Fundamentals of durability of concrete. Principles of statistical quality control of concrete.
6) CONCRETE- Property-composition relations and basics of concrete mix design.
7) Masonry- Materials for masonry. Introduction to masonry construction. Basics of structural behavior and failure of masonry. Allowable stress approach for masonry design. Introduction to reinforced masonry.

9) Cement Based Fiber Composites- Properties of fibers. Principles of design of cement based fiber composites.
10) POLYMERS and POLYMER COMPOSITES- Introduce types of polymers and fibers.
11) POLYMERS and POLYMER COMPOSITES- Structure and design principles of polymer based fiber composites. Examples of end use of polymer composites.
12) METALS- Iron-carbon alloys for structural use. Metal alloys in civil engineering.
13) Polymers (fire-resistance properties of polymers, applications of polymers in the construction industry) - Paints (painting systems, some common types of paint)
14) TIMBER- Introduction of nature made composite: wood. Structural Properties of timber
