Profile of the Program

Students who have a Master's degree with a thesis in fields such as Economics, Finance and Econometrics are accepted to the program. Doctorate Program consists of 3 parts: i) completion of courses lasting 1 to 2 years ii) Qualifying Exam and iii) doctoral dissertation research. Students from other graduate programs stated above may be required to take some additional courses to prepare themselves for the doctoral program at the beginning of their doctoral education. The PhD program is a full-time program for students with a thesis Master's, consisting of a course load of 24 credits (84 ECTS) (equivalent to 8 courses), a seminar course, a qualifying exam and a doctoral thesis. In the first year, students are expected to complete their compulsory course load. The maximum time for students to successfully complete all required credit courses along with elective courses is four semesters. Students have to take a two-part Qualifying Exam, an oral and a written one, by the end of the fifth semester at the latest. This Exam must be successfully completed by the end of the 6th semester at the latest. Students who fail to pass the qualifying exam in their second entitlement are dismissed from the program. The maximum completion period for the doctoral program is twelve semesters, regardless of whether or not the students are registered for each semester. The program, in general, covers fundamental economic and financial theories, and empirical methods together with their applications. The goal of the PhD in Economics and Finance is to contribute to the academic research that minds social welfare, promotes sustainable development in the economy, and facilitates developing stable financial markets. In this regard, this program trains students who are interested in Turkey and the world economy and who are competent in numerical methods so that they can conduct independent and original research at international standards.
