ECONOMICS AND FINANCE (ENGLISH, PHD)


Profile of the Program

Students who have a Master's degree with a thesis in fields such as Economics, Finance and Econometrics are accepted to the program. Doctorate Program consists of 3 parts: i) completion of courses lasting 1 to 2 years ii) Qualifying Exam and iii) doctoral dissertation research. Students from other graduate programs stated above may be required to take some additional courses to prepare themselves for the doctoral program at the beginning of their doctoral education. The PhD program is a full-time program for students with a thesis Master's, consisting of a course load of 24 credits (84 ECTS) (equivalent to 8 courses), a seminar course, a qualifying exam and a doctoral thesis. In the first year, students are expected to complete their compulsory course load. The maximum time for students to successfully complete all required credit courses along with elective courses is four semesters. Students have to take a two-part Qualifying Exam, an oral and a written one, by the end of the fifth semester at the latest. This Exam must be successfully completed by the end of the 6th semester at the latest. Students who fail to pass the qualifying exam in their second entitlement are dismissed from the program. The maximum completion period for the doctoral program is twelve semesters, regardless of whether or not the students are registered for each semester. The program, in general, covers fundamental economic and financial theories, and empirical methods together with their applications. The goal of the PhD in Economics and Finance is to contribute to the academic research that minds social welfare, promotes sustainable development in the economy, and facilitates developing stable financial markets. In this regard, this program trains students who are interested in Turkey and the world economy and who are competent in numerical methods so that they can conduct independent and original research at international standards.

Specific Admission Requirements

Before the start of each semester, the Institute requests the quota of Turkish and foreign students from the programs and, if any, the special conditions required for application. In line with the conditions from the programs, it announces the names of the graduate programs that will accept students, the quota for Turkish and foreign students, the documents required for the application, the deadline and other issues, and announces these to the candidates. Candidates, who are interest in graduate education, must apply to the Institute with the required documents within the period specified in the announcement. In order for students to apply to this doctoral program, they must hold; a Master's degree with thesis and have a minimum of 60 standard points at Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES), conducted centrally by the Measurement Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), in the score type of the program applied or ALES base score on GMAT determined by YÖK or the equivalent base score on the GRE exams. Since the program is in English, it is necessary to get at least 65 points from one of the foreign language exams determined by the Inter-Universities Council or to get the required score from the language exam to be held by the university to have the exam and the validity period of the exam should not have expired. Foreign Language Exam (YDS)/YÖKDİL: 65, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 79, BAU Language Proficiency Exam: 65. Students must also receive a unanimous passing grade from the referees in the oral interview to be held. NOTE: The above-mentioned score criteria are the minimum values ​​for application and may vary in the Economics and Finance doctoral program.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The doctoral program consists of a total of 24 credits and 240 ECTS. Students must be successful in 8 courses consisting of compulsory, required elective and elective courses in the curriculum and Seminar, Doctoral Thesis 1-2-3-4 courses together with Doctoral Qualifying Exam. Students must take the Doctoral Qualifying Exam in 5 semesters at the latest and successfully pass it in 6 semesters. The maximum completion period for the doctoral program is twelve semesters, regardless of whether or not the students are registered for each semester.

Recognition of Prior Learning

In this program, the recognition of previous learning is made according to the Bahçeşehir University Graduate Education Regulations.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Students who successfully complete this program can become a manager in private and public institutions, a lecturer in universities and a principal investigator in applied research.

Access to Further Studies

Students who successfully complete this program can become post-doctoral researchers with the article(s) to be published from their doctoral dissertation and the reference letters they receive from the professors they had successfully completed their courses with.
