Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to discuss the process and techniques for assessing and managing the impacts on and risks to humans and the ecosystem associated with engineered facilities, processes and products. Both biophysical and social impacts are addressed.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the theory and methodology of exposure and risk assessment
2. Define the relationship and association of exposure assessment with health risk assessment
3. Define the implications of exposure type
4. Apply mathematical and statistical models to quantify exposures and risks
5. Perform the sampling and analytical methods for measuring exposure to air, water, soil contaminants
6. Explain risk management and communication
7. Perform toxicity assessment
8. Analyse uncertainty
9. Select exposure measurement methods

Course Content

Introduction to the methods of environmental impact and environmental risk assessment. Analysis of environmental impact using technical and non-technical parameters, environmental impact assessment legislation, impact prediction, strategic impact assessment.
