Course Objectives: | The main objective of this course is to enable the students to better understand and analyze politics in Turkey. A major theme of the course concerns the problems that Turkey has faced in consolidating its democracy. The course will begin with an overview of Turkish politics during the 100 years. The reflections of the modernization efforts that started from the Ottoman Empire to today's Republic of Turkey will be examined. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; Students who successfully complete this course will be able to; Understand modernization since the 18th century Ottoman Empire. Explain the fundamental reasons for the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire. Describe the main political structures, institutions, actors and ideologies in the Republic of Turkey. Describe the basic dynamics of the transition from single-party to multi-party politics in the Republican Era of Turkey. Describe the continuities and ruptures between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. Understand the main analytical approaches to the study of politics in Turkey. |
The political crises and problems experienced until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire along with the modernization efforts. The resistance of the authoritarian structure of the Ottoman Empire to modernization and the moves of the Ottoman Empire during the collapse process. The 100th anniversary of the Republic, the achievements of the Republic and the chronic problems of the Republic of Turkey since the Ottoman period. Teaching methods of the course are Lecture, Group Work, Reading, Discussion and Project Preparation. |
