Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of cinematography in this ever changing digital era of film making.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1. Generate ability to use cinematograhic equipment.
2. Optimize conditions relative to lighting and calibration of equipment.
3. Identify differences between film and digital cinematographic production.
4. Analyze moving images in aesthetical and historical aspects.
5. Identify lenses and camera angles and their usage in various film directorial techniques.

Course Content

In this course, basic theory, technology and techniques in cinematography will be covered along with hands-on course works. At the end of the semester every student is expected to realize a 3 minutes-long short video and to demonstrate their skills of using the camera, lighting, colors, framing and lenses.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introduction to Cinematography Course Discussion: Aim of this course, expectations, requirements, projects. Homework Assignment: Prepare a short presentation about your favorite cinematographer. Why do you like him/her? Please provide visual samples of his/her work.
2) Understanding Images: Aesthetics, History and Philosophy. Homework Assignment: Find 2 photos and 2 paintings you like. Write short essay (no less than 1 page) about why you like those images and give a brief aesthetic analysis of these images. Working on the assignments.
3) Formats: Video vs Film vs Digital. Homework Assignment: Find 3 different films shot with different formats (35 mm, digital, 65 mm, 16 mm, Tape based, RED etc.) Try to evaluate the results in terms of quality. Write a short paper (no less than 1 page) about format choice in cinematography. Working on the assignments.
4) Our basic tool: the camera. Application: Hands on with a Canon EOS 5D MK II camera, learn the basics and advanced setups hidden inside the camera. Working on the assignments.
5) Lenses What is A Lens?: Basic properties of lenses. Effects of different lenses on image and the story. Homework Assignment: Find a photograph in which the story is told through the camera angle (lens use). Write a short description of the image and how the story is told. What is the positioning of the camera, the distance between subject and camera and what is the effect of this relationship? Working on the assignments.
6) Digital Cinema Camera Workshop: Red Camera Operation Workshop. Working on the assignments.
7) Lighting Workshop 1. Working on the assignments.
8) Lighting Workshop 2. Working on the assignments.
9) Guest Lecturer: TBA ( It will be an active cinematographer from Turkish Film Industry). Working on the assignments.
10) Color theory and practice for cinematographers. Working on the assignments.
11) Color and post-production for cinematographers. Assignment: TBA. Working on the assignments.
12) Screening. Working on the assignments.
13) Final Project Assessment. Working on the final projects.
