Course Objectives: This course aims to promote students’ verbal and non-verbal oral communication skills in a variety of settings in interpersonal, group and public speaking contexts. The emphasis is placed on the development of their oral and aural skills through meaningful tasks designed for the analysis and practice of authentic language. Group and individual tasks and presentations will also provide students with an opportunity to improve their critical thinking and decision-making abilities, and to master speech delivery skills.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
By the end of this course, the students are expected to have acquired and improved the ability to:
1. Recognise different types of oral interactions and speeches.
2. Research a topic using library facilities and reliable online sources of information.
3. Develop a speech outline for a better organization of their ideas.
4. Develop arguments in a clear and logical manner.
5. Use various types of evidence to support their arguments.
6. Deliver a speech based on the principles of
a. audience analysis
b. appropriate and effective use of oral and body language
c. effective group interaction and problem-solving skills
d. effective group presentations
e. effective use of visuals
7. Develop critical listening skills and concepts.
8. Work in group tasks in a collaborative way

Course Content

Development of verbal communication skills using appropriate expressions and strategies for various verbal communication situations; developing the ability to express emotions and thoughts effectively through dialogue, presentation, and discussion activities; using current, original, visual, audio and audiovisual materials.

4) How to become an effective communicator Lecture & Group discussions – watching the speeches of effective public speakers
5) Presentations of Newspaper articles Group discussion on the analysis of newspaper language
6) Introduction to informative speeches & basic organizational patterns for informative speeches • Informative speech presentations are assigned for week 8. • The 1st draft of informative speeches (i.e., the outlines) are due week 7.
7) Analysing different speeches and/or TV documentaries for their organizational pattersn and for the intended audience & peer review of the first drafts of the informative speech presentations Search for an audience analysis and bring it to the class to discuss the important factors to pay attention to when presenting.
