Course Objectives: Aims to teach the fundamentals of music, makam and usul (rhythm cycle) theory and the practices of these concepts

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
The students will know:
1- the fundamentals of Turkish music
2- the major components of the maqam system
3- the traditional rhythm cycles (usul)
4- the major maqams (scaler constructions)
5- Understand the relation between the 2 to 10 time rhythm cycles (usuls) and the melody
6- the students can use the major components during improvisation

Course Content

1) Fundamentals of music. Staff, notes, rests, clef, sharps and flats
2) Fundamentals of music: note and rest values, measures, metric reading
3) Names of the pitches Çeşnis (scaler components)
4) Studies with Rast and Uşşak çeşnis.
5) Studies with Hüseyni and Buselik çeşnis
6) Studies with Kürdi and Hicaz çeşnis
7) Traditional rhythm cycles (in different time signatures)
8) Midterm exam
9) Traditional rhythm cycles (6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 beats cycles)
10) Instrumental forms: Peşrev and Saz Semai
11) Transposing and sight reading the çeşnis to different pitches (aural skills)
12) Makams: Rast and Uşşak
13) Makams Hüseyni and Buselik
14) Makams Kürdi and Hicaz
