Course Objectives: This course aims to teach the students the ability to analyze both fixed and moving images, which have different roles such as artwork, document, symptom in our age; the ability to express these analyses in written form in an academic language and the ability to produce original and profound visual projects based on their analyses.

1) Will recognize and analyze the elements, actors and dynamics of visual culture.

2) Will question the current and future place of photography in global visual culture.

3) Will critically examine major theorists and their theories on image from the perspectives of social sciences and humanities.

4) Understand the conceptual connections between plastic arts, cinema, photography, history and theory.

5) Express their visual reading skills in conceptual texts.

Course Content

Photography and Visual Methodologies presents 20th and 21st centuries' major theories on the elements, actors and dynamics of visual culture from the perspectives of social science and humanities.

6) The 4 components of Visual Methodologies II: Circulation of the Image and the Image's audience.
7) Analysis of content and composition.
8) Semiology.
9) Psychoanalysis.
10) Discourse Analysis.
11) Photographic experiments in anthropology and ethnography.
12) Digital methodologies.
13) Photographs as research objects.
14) Presentation of and feedback for students' final project proposals.
