Course Objectives: This course aims to teach in the organization and arrangement of visual and auditory materials during post-production processes, several editing techniques, the function of editing in cinema, and particular ways of short film editing by theoretical and practical exercises via Adobe Premiere.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1. Students will be able to edit short films, make movie trailers and promotional videos.
2. When using the editing program, students will be able to make the organization and arrangement of visual and auditory materials.
3. Students will learn the particularities of several editing techniques.
4. Students will learn about video and sound editing, time in the film, and the installation of dramatic elements by editing.
5. Materials to be edited by students will be delivered to students within itslearning.
6. It is aimed for students to make projects from these materials.
7. Students will have both theoretical and practical knowledge about editing.
8. Students will basically gain knowledge by understanding the internal logic of other editing programs through Adobe Premiere editing program.
9. Students will learn about the role of the editor (editor in chief) in the film crew and the postproduction process, beyond being an editing operator.
10. Students will learn about the dialectic of film editing in a variety of different film genres and develop their practical skills by assignments.
11. Students will acquire knowledge and practices that will contribute to their future projects, along with the skills they have learned in this course.

Course Content

Many exercises in the course and academic discussions will be made through editing theories, traditional and contemporary examples in order to broaden students’ theoretical and intellectual knowledge on editing.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

2) The definition of 15 fundamental editing techniques. Analyzing contemporary examples: “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Ghost Dog”
3) Introduction to basic editing. Analysis of editing techniques through the movie titled “Hard Eight.”
4) Practicing editing steps; Log and Capture, Assembly, Rough Cut, Fine Cut, Final Cut. Beginning to the Rough Cut.
5) Applying Editing Techniques to a Fine-cut. Cross cutting / Parallel Editing.
6) Making of Fiction Film Trailer
7) Midterm Week, Feedbacks, screening for first cut of the midterm project.
8) Editing Animation Studio’s Filmography Video, including Gemini, Pixar, Disney.
9) Editing Animation Studio’s Filmography Video, Feedback Week.
10) Following a Script as an editor and assembling the shots according to text. (1. Part of the Final Project).
11) Introduction to sound editing techniques in Adobe Premiere. L-cut, overlapping dialogue, and displaced diegetic sound. (2. Part of the Final Project).
12) Introduction to basic color correction in Adobe Premiere. (3. Part of the Final Project)
13) In course, practice on final project’s final cut, feedbacks.
