Course Objectives:	In this course, students will learn how Istanbul has been changed by the neoliberal economic policies implemented in Turkey since the 1950s, but especially after the 1980s, and by globalization, which has had an impact on many areas, by looking at the city from different perspectives. Throughout the course, where Istanbul is considered as a global city, it is aimed that students will be able to see the relationship of a city with globalization as well as the different layers of Istanbul and learn to appreciate the value of these layers. With the active participation of the students, they are expected to develop and discuss their own ideas on the meaning of globalization, its economic dimension, the connection between the globalization process and Istanbul, how Istanbul is globalized, the effects of globalization on urban transformation processes and the cultural life of the city. The course aims to introduce students from different departments to concepts such as globalization, urbanization, urban transformation, displacement and differentiation.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Understand what globalization is,
2. To learn about the development and globalization of cities
3. To have knowledge about the planned economy period and neoliberal transformation in Turkey
4. To see urbanization in Turkey since 1950 through Istanbul,
5. To see how Istanbul has been affected economically and spatially by globalization,
6. To see the effects of this process in areas such as urban memory, culture industry, food culture and shopping habits
7. Appreciate the richness of these different fields and raise awareness on how to incorporate this richness into their lives

Course Content

Globalization, cities, globalization in Türkiye and the globalization of Istanbul, change, Istanbul and social memory, culture industry in Istanbul, food culture. Teaching methods and techniques used in the course: narration, individual work, case study, project preparation, reading, trips and observation will be used.
