Course Objectives: The course aims at a detailed analysis of the emergence of sociological thought in Turkish society and the development of the discipline of sociology in Turkey, from the early contributions to the field to the present state of theory and research.

Learning Outcomes

Course Content

The course aims to introduce the heritage of Turkish sociology to students. The course is divided into two sections. In the first section the course explores the roots and the development of the sociological thinking in Turkey by tracing it back to late Ottoman period. In this section students will learn about the historical stages of Turkish sociology as well as the main approaches and specificities within the sociological thinking. The course also aims to introduce the students the original works of major Turkish sociologist. In the second part of the course each of the major sociologist will be discussed separately by focusing on the original works. As part of the aim of becoming familiar with the work of a major Turkish sociologist, students are expected to make a presentations upon their selection of work.
