Course Objectives: This course's objective is to review all the evolutions that the concept of democracy had from its' foundation till current understanding and also confirms the mechanism which are being used by political organizations in 21st century with the comparative perspective.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. Knows the basic structure of political government and determines the different variations of it in the history.
II. Determines the relation between the governing and governed in 21st Century.

Course Content

Different concept of democracy: classical greek democracy, bourgeois democracy; separation of power; elections and political parties; instruments of democracy; militant democracy

2) Athens democracy and conditions of the period and its's fundamental institutions. Reviewing the first democracy practice.
3) Athens democracy - legislation - executive - judiciary - personal freedoms Reviewing the first democracy practice.
4) Athens democracy: Athens democracy to its oppositions and supporters. Criticizing of Athens democracy
5) The effects which gave shape to modern democracy The fundamentals of current understanding of democracy - Introduction
6) Demos: Liberalism and natural law The effects of liberalism and natural law doctrine on the quantities of the objectives of the democracy.What kind of society?
7) Cratos: Social contract and separation of powers. The effects of social contract and separation of powers doctrines on the application of democracy. What kind of government?
8) The tools of the democracy: Elections and political parties Elections and organized political participation and tools for citizens to participate on political issues. Reviewing of the basic principles.
9) The tools of the democracy: Elections and political parties Elections and organized political participation and tools for citizens to participate on political issues. Reviewing of the basic principles.
10) Tools of the democracies: Referendum and other mechanisms. Reviewing other mechanisms of the democracy such as citizens veto, citizens right to initiative for legislation
11) Models of democracies, plural democracy, consensus democracy Reviewing the different enforcements of democracy and its' relation between government structure.

13) Militant democracy Militant democracy in comparative law and Turkish law system.
