Course Objectives: | This course provides a comprehensive overview of wireless networking and mobile communications technologies, such as mobility and handoff management protocols, network quality of service, cellular networks (GSM, GPRS, CDMA, 3G), wireless mesh networks, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio networks, wireless mobile and ad hoc networks, wireless local area networks, and wireless sensor networks. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; 1. Describe physical medium of a wireless channel, 2. Explain GSM radio structure 3. Have a broad understanding of 3G radio network 4. Gain knowledge on several wireless network structures 5. Explain cognitive radio |
This course starts with an overview of the propagation of waves in a wireless medium. Various wireless channel models are introduced and their capacity values are calculated. Next, GSM radio network is analyzed including GPRS, EDGE, handover management, and coverage. By reviewing CDMA and introducing wideband CDMA, 3G radio network is analyzed including cell planning, HSDPA, HSPA, HSPA++. Next, various wireless network structures are introduced and analyzed, such as ad-hoc wireless networks, wireless mesh networks, wireless LANs and wireless sensor networks. Next, cognitive radio concepts are introduced and finally cooperative and large networks are analyzed. |
