Course Objectives: In this course, we will describe the main causes of social, economic and political inequality. We will evaluate importance of political, economic, and social forces in creating and sustaining inequality. The significance of race, ethnicity and gender will be analyzed, too. We will also describe the use of social policy to mitigate inequality and the role of “class”.

2) Evaluating the major conceptual and research issues related to social change and stratification
3) Analyzing contemporary sociological perspective in the field of stratification

5) Analyzing Turkish society by a new sociological perspective

Course Content

This course analyzes some of the fundamental topics like social transformation, inequality, exclusion, poverty, ethnicity, gender, class, globalization, crime, and urbanization. The first half of the course describes fundamental sociological concepts and issues. The second half of the course mostly evaluates various countries on the issues of poverty, social exclusion, discrimination, urbanization, citizenship and ethnicity. The course aims at both introducing students with the fundamentals of sociology discipline and developing their ability of critical thinking on social problems, conflicts and inequalities at the global and local levels.
