Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is to define ship, shipowner, carrier and other maritime law persons and analyze different contract types of this field. In addition to these, maritime accidents will be examined in detail.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. Defines the basic concepts such as ship, ship owner, captain, carrier, shipper.
II. Analyze the ships have right to hoist a flag and usage conditions of this right.
III. Identify the types of contracts and analyzes the terms and the results of charter contracts.
IV. Distinguish contracts relating to maritime law from other contracts.
V. Defines the rights and obligations of the shipowner.
VI. Defines the rights and obligations of the carrier arising from contract.
VII. Defines the rights and obligations of the charterer arising from contract.
VIII. Detects the liability regime on maritime accidents.
IX. Detects the rights on the ship and their usage patterns.

Introduction to Maritime Law: Sources, Ship registry, Rights on ships, Captain, Maritime joint- venture, Concept of Shipowner and His Liability, Concept of Carrier, Carrier’s Rights and Liability, Limits of Carrier’s Liability, Contract of carriage goods by sea, Bills of Lading, Collision, Rescue, General average
