Course Objectives: This is a hands-on design course where concepts and techniques of visual communication, the relationship between word and image will be introduced to the students. Objectives include building an understanding of the principles of design, a knowledge of design terminology, an awareness of design process, forming the concept and exploration of certain graphic design tools, building a creative relationship between word and image, establishing a positive learning and stimulating studio environment where creative work and self and group critiques can take place. The instructional methods of this course will include lectures, group discussions, individual critiques and creative work. Doing work on time, being ready to work in class, participation in discussion, critique and other public forms of participation are vital to the success of this class.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. Visualize concepts.
II. Recognize typography principles and apply them to their work.
III. Enrich their visual vocabulary as well as design terminology
IV. Build an awareness of design process
V. Explore composition, components, and concepts in graphic design by combining word and image
VI. Experiment with creative ways of bringing word and image together
VII. Exhibit critical thinking skills in the formation of graphic design and draw a synthesis to the given design problem and media
VIII. Establish a positive, motivating and stimulating team member character
IX. Display succesful execution and presentation techniques with the use of various graphic design tools, media and computer technology.
