Profile of the Program

The goal of the Department of Sociology at Bahçeşehir is to offer students a bachelor sociology degree that combines social science and humanities perspectives. The curriculum aims to bring up graduates, who are well-equipped with analytical and methodological thinking capabilities, deeply aware of local and global dynamics, and who have the potential to conduct research in a broad range of fields and have ethical sensitivity. Students, in their four-year program, are equipped with major theories of sociology and anthropology and they are able to apply all of them to social conditions, alongside identifying the basic methodological approaches in building sociological knowledge and using computer software for statistical and qualitative analysis. They also gain the ability to design and complete a written research project.

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts

Specific Admission Requirements

Student admission for this undergraduate program is made through university entrance examinations (YGS-LYS) prepared in the framework of the regulations set by Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK). International students are accepted to this undergraduate program according to the score of one of the international exams they take such as SAT,ACT etc. or according to their high school diploma score. Exchange student admission is made according to the requirements determined by bilateral agreements signed by BAU and the partner university. Visiting students can enroll for the courses offered in this program upon the confirmation of the related academic unit. Additionally, they need to prove their English language level since the medium of instruction at BAU is English.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

After completing their 4-year undergraduate education, the students are awarded a Bachelor's of Arts (BA) degree in sociology. With such an interdisciplinary background, sociology graduates from Bahçeşehir University have the opportunity to work in a broad array of fields, including both the private and the public sectors. The graduates of sociology department acquires the basic knowledge of sociology and an understanding of current issues in the areas of gender, politics, population, religion, crime, environment, and will be able to apply a variety of theoretical perspectives to the analysis of social problems by identifying the basic methodological approaches in sociological investigation. Students learn and compare theoretical perspectives and contemporary theories related to political sociology, demography, urban and rural sociology and basic concepts of the sociology of gender, religion and crime. Sociology at Bahçeşehir is distinctive in the sense that it emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach with a special focus on the intersection of sociology with anthropology, history and political science. Social movements, migration, culture, power, hierarchies of class, race and gender and social conflict are some among the major themes that the department curriculum highlights.

Recognition of Prior Learning

At Bahçeşehir University, full-time students can be exempted from some courses within the framework of the related by laws. If the content of the course previously taken in another institution is equivalent to the course offered at BAU, then the student can be exempted from this course with the approval of the related faculty/graduate school after the evaluation of the course content.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The aim of our program is to train our students with basic scientific knowledge and ethical sensitivity. The students will be equipped with fundamental knowledge and skills that will enable them to continue their further education and work in institutions of higher learning; and work in the following institutions is various positions related to their knowledge and skills: public or private institutions, local governments, media and publication corporations, public opinion poll research companies, industry and private corporations, international organizations, the administration and research departments of international or local companies, non-governmental organizations, and media or market research, further and work in institutions of higher learning.

Access to Further Studies

The students graduating from this program may apply to second cycle (Master's degree) programmes.

Program Outcomes

1 To learn and compare major sociology perspectives, both classical and contemporary, and apply all of them to analysis of social conditions.
2 To be able to identify the basic methodological approaches in building sociological and anthropological knowledge at local and global levels
3 To be able to use theoretical and applied knowledge acquired in the fields of statistics in social sciences.
4 To have a basic knowledge of other disciplines (including psychology, history, political science, communication studies and literature) that can contribute to sociology and to be able to make use of this knowledge in analyzing sociological processes
5 To have a knowledge and practice of scientific and ethical principles in collecting, interpreting and publishing sociological data also develop ability how to share this data with experts and lay people, using effective communication skills
6 To develop competence in analyzing and publishing sociological knowledge by using computer software for quantitative and qualitative analysis; and develop an attitute for learning new techniques in these fields.
7 To identify and to have a knowledge of the theories related to urban and rural sociology and demography, and political sociology, sociology of gender, sociology of body, visual sociology, sociology of work, sociology of religion, sociology of knowledge and sociology of crime.
8 To have knowledge of how sociology is positioned as a scientific discipline from a philosophical and historical perspective
9 To have the awareness of social issues in Turkish society, to develop critical perspective in analysing these issues and to have a knowledge of the works of Turkish sociologists and to be able to transfer this knowledge
10 To have the awareness of social issues and global societal processes and to apply sociological analysis to development and social responsibility projects
11 To have the ability to define a research question, design a research project and complete a written report for various fields of sociology, either as an individual or as a team member.
12 To be able to transfer the knowledge gained in the areas of sociology to the level of secondary school.
