Profile of the Program

Revolutionary changes in news gathering and news writing through new media devices require a new educational program. Our motive is to construct a new curriculum that includes training in new modes of communication and news content production. Our objective is to prepare our graduates for the world of the new media by equipping them with all the necessary tools and enable them to find employment in numerous fields ranging from classical to internet journalism and all the forms of social media.

Qualification Awarded

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts

Level of Qualification

This is a Bachelor’s Degree (First Cycle) program.

Specific Admission Requirements

Student admission for this undergraduate program is made through university entrance examinations (YGS-LYS) prepared in the framework of the regulations set by Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK). International students are accepted to this undergraduate program according to the score of one of the international exams they take such as SAT,ACT etc. or according to their high school diploma score. Exchange student admission is made according to the requirements determined by bilateral agreements signed by BAU and the partner university. Visiting students can enroll for the courses offered in this program upon the confirmation of the related academic unit. Additionally, they need to prove their English language level since the medium of instruction atBAU is English.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students studying in this undergraduate program are required to have a Cumulative Grade Points Average (Cum.GPA) of not less than 2.00/4.00 and have completed all the courses with at least a letter grade of D in the program in order to graduate. The minimum number of ECTS credits required for graduation is 240. It is also mandatory for the students to complete their compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.

Recognition of Prior Learning

At Bahcesehir University , full-time students can be exempted from some courses within the framework of the related by laws. If the content of the course previously taken in another institution is equivalent to the course offered at BAU, then the student can be exempted from this course with the approval of the related faculty/graduate school after the evaluation of the course content.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

New Media Department graduates will have the chance to be employed in national and international print and audio-visual media as well as the new media of the virtual world. Employment opportunities include: journalist, reporter, columnist, editor, critic, press and media advisor, customer representative, public opinion poll researcher, social media (facebook, twitter, blog, etc.) expert. Outlets in which our graduates may find employment include: newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, advertising agencies, publication houses, film production and distribution companies.

Access to Further Studies

The students graduating from this program may apply to second cycle (Master's degree) programmes.

Program Outcomes

1 To be able to critically interpret and discuss the theories, the concepts, the traditions, and the developments in the history of thought which are fundamental for the field of new media, journalism and communication.
2 To be able to attain written, oral and visual knowledge about technical equipment and software used in the process of news and the content production in new media, and to be able to acquire effective abilities to use them on a professional level.
3 To be able to get information about the institutional agents and generally about the sector operating in the field of new media, journalism and communication, and to be able to critically evaluate them.
4 To be able to comprehend the reactions of the readers, the listeners, the audiences and the users to the changing roles of media environments, and to be able to provide and circulate an original contents for them and to predict future trends.
5 To be able to apprehend the basic theories, the concepts and the thoughts related to neighbouring fields of new media and journalism in a critical manner.
6 To be able to grasp global and technological changes in the field of communication, and the relations due to with their effects on the local agents.
7 To be able to develop skills on gathering necessary data by using scientific methods, analyzing and circulating them in order to produce content.
8 To be able to develop acquired knowledge, skills and competence upon social aims by being legally and ethically responsible for a lifetime, and to be able to use them in order to provide social benefit.
9 To be able to operate collaborative projects with national/international colleagues in the field of new media, journalism and communication.
10 To be able to improve skills on creating works in various formats and which are qualified to be published on the prestigious national and international channels.
