Profile of the Program

The main aim of the PhD program is to raise scholars to work in universities, think tanks and research centers in Turkey and abroad. It also offers graduates seeking positions in other venues an opportunity to broaden their horizons and specialize in various areas of the discipline of Political Science and International Relations. This program is run by the Graduate School and the language of the program is English.

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Political Science and International Relations

Specific Admission Requirements

In order to apply to the doctoral program, candidates must have a thesis-based master's degree and must have an ALES score of no less than 55 points in the score type of the program they are applying for, as determined by the Institute Board recommendation and Senate decision. In addition to the ALES score, a written scientific assessment exam and/or an additional interview result and a master's grade point average may also be evaluated for the acceptance of those who will apply to the doctoral program. Matters related to this evaluation, application conditions and other matters regarding student admission are announced to candidates through appropriate means upon the recommendation of the Institute Board of Directors and the rules determined by the Senate.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students who are admitted to this program following the completion of a master’s degree with thesis, had to pass (grade 3.00/4.00) a total of seven courses at a minimum, collecting 21 credits/60 ECTS in an academic year comprising Fall and Spring semesters, with a total of 240 ECTS for graduation. The PhD program is eight semesters and the maximum completion period is twelve semesters, regardless of whether they have registered for each semester, starting from the semester when the courses related to the program they are enrolled for are accepted with a master's degree with thesis. The maximum period of successful completion of credit courses required for the PhD program is four semesters for those who are admitted with a master's degree with thesis.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who will continue their education at Bahçeşehir University may be exempted from the courses they took at their previous educational institution within the framework of certain regulations. If the content of the course taken is compatible with the content of the course given at BAU and is approved by the institute directorate, the student may be exempted from this course.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates having a diploma from Bahçeşehir University’s PhD Program in Political Science and International Relations can be employed as faculty in prestigious universities in Turkey and abroad. They can also find positions in international organizations as well as state institutions and agencies. Some graduates can add more to their expertise by enrolling in postgraduate degrees in various universities.

Access to Further Studies

Students who successfully complete the program can apply for post-doctoral studies according to their areas of expertise.

7 Publish in national and/or international peer-reviewed scholarly journals either independently or as a team member.
8 Organize various activities and projects related to the field.
9 Follow contemporary scholarly publications related to the field.
10 Recognize the gaps in the field as regards theory and practice.
11 Communicate with peers both orally and in writing, by using a foreign language at least at a level of European Language Portfolio C1 General Level and the necessary informatics and communication technologies.
12 Establish an effective dialogue with experts demonstrating their field-related competence.
13 Possess competence to interpret the new political actors, theories and concepts in a global era.
