Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is to teach the design principles and production techniques of creative audio-visual content for dynamic media like TV and cinema unlike traditional print medium by integrating graphic design with time and sound/music. The students are expected to combine the experience and knowledge they had from the previous design classes with sound and motion to be able to create design products like maintitle, commercial or broadcast identity.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Analyze national and global motion design examples.
2) Recognize the basic principles of motion design.
3) Execute concept board and storyboard
4) Identify output formats for TV, cinema, DVD/Blue/Ray as both SD and HD.
5) Execute basic animation via current relevant software.
6) Execute basic compositing via current relevant software.
7) Execute effects and filters via current relevant software.
8) Analyze sound in motion design.
9) Identify video compressions
10) Execute motion design principles.
11) Design creative and well-crafted motion graphics projects for variable media in time based visual communication field.

Course Content

Analyzing national and global examples, resolution of genres, The basic principles of motion design, the strategies of developing a concept and production, Concept and storyboard, The broadcast format standards, Typographic animation with Adobe After Effects, Basic Animation, Masking, layer, channel usage and basic compositing, Filters, effects and coloring, Sound and music, Broadcast formats, rendering, compressions, output properties, TV logotype application, TV commercial packshot animation application

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

1) Introduction to the Course and Syllabus Review; Introduction to basic concepts.
2) Analyzing national and global examples, resolution of genres.
3) The basic principles of motion design, the strategies of developing a concept and production.
4) Concept and storyboard. HW: Concept and storyboard exercise for the project
5) The broadcast format standards: TV, cinema, DVD, HD. HW: Concept finalization.
6) Introduction to typographic animation with Adobe After Effects. HW: Working on the project.
7) AAE: Basic Animation HW: Working on the project.
8) AAE: Masking, layer, channel usage and basic compositing. HW: Working on the project.
9) AAE: Filters, effects and coloring. HW: Working on the project.
10) AAE: Sound and music. MIDTERM I (Project due)
11) AAE: Broadcast formats, rendering, compressions, output properties. HW: Working on the project.
12) AAE: TV logotype application HW:Working on the project.
13) AAE: TV commercial packshot animation application HW: Working on the project.
14) Evaluation of projects, perfecting and finalizing.
