Course Objectives: | This course is designed to provide an introduction to the economic, institutional and political issues involved in global trade policy discussion; and the position of the EU in current commercial relations. The aims of the course are to provide students with the necessary knowledge for a deeper understanding of modern trade relations of the European Union; and to improve the analytical thinking in matters pertinent to world trading system. The lectures begin by covering the essentials of trade policy, it is followed by a consideration of evolution of the world trading system under the auspices of GATT and the WTO (World Trade Organisation). The course finally turns to the evolution of and the developments in trade policy in the European Union. It analyses the EU’s priorities in the multilateral and regional trade negotiations and its new ‘Global Europe’ strategy. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; I.Encounters economic and political concepts underlying the world trading system II.Understands historical evolution of the Post WW-II world trading system and the GATT/WTO III.Learns how to evaluate and to make an analysis of modern trade relations among countries IV.Knows institutional functioning of the WTO V.Knows the agenda issues and problems in multilateral trade negotiations (i.e. Doha Development Round) VI.Identifies problems and disputed issues in international trade and new trade policy agenda VII.Describes the main characteristics of the EU trade policy VIII.Improves an analytical thinking in matters pertinent to EU’s trade strategy and the developments thereof IX.Identifies the priorities and common position of the EU in world multilateral trade negotiations X.Identifies the motives for and the dimensions of EU’s bilateral trade relations (i.e. FTAs) XI.Explains the role of the EU as a ‘global actor’ in international trade |
