Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the historical background, structure, actors, ideology and dynamics of Turkish politics. The course is composed of three parts. Part I reviews Ottoman – Turkish political history from early attempts at modernization at the end of 18th century until the elections of June 2011. Part II introduces the major analytical approaches to the study of Turkish politics, and Part III focuses on issues and problems related with consolidation of democracy in Turkey.

1. Grasp major attempts at modernization in the Ottoman Empire beginning in late 18th century.
2. Analyze the basic reasons for the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire.
3. Identify major political structures, institutions, players, and ideologies in the Turkish Republic.
4. Analyze the basic dynamics of transition from single – party to multi – party politics, and from tutelary towards liberal democracy in Republican Turkey.
5. Compare continuities and ruptures between Ottoman and Republican Turkey.
6. Evaluate major analytical approaches to the study of politics in Turkey.
7. Discuss major factors that contribute to and obstruct consolidation of liberal democracy in Turkey.

Early attempts at modernization, Tanzimat and Second Constitutional Period, Founding of the Republic, single-party regime and transition to multi-party system, Tutelary democracy and reforms toward transition to liberal democracy, Theoretical approaches to Turkish politics, Transition to democracy in theory and the Turkish experience, Parties and Elections in Turkey, Party systems and the Turkish party system, Military and Politics in Turkey, post-1980 politics, Justice and Development Party, Problems of Democracy.
