Course Objectives: | The purpose of the course is to help students develop their own career plan and portfolio by forming their own career identity. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to design and implement an individualized career development plan for securing internships, permanent employment, and continued professional growth. These goals will be met by strengthening skills and knowledge about the topics in the weekly syllabus. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; • will be able to understand how to develop an effective plan for personal development • will be able to have gained essential time management strategies that will improve their professional productivity • will be able to acquire skills for building a peer network and appreciate the role of the networking in this process • will be able to know how to evaluate a job offer • Know how to successfully negotiate for salary, space and time • will be able to gain essential strategies that will improve the balance between their personal and professional lives • will be able to know interview techniques • will be able to create their own career plan portfolio • will be able to write a CV • will be able to write cover letters for their job applications |
The course will be highly interactive and discussion oriented requiring your participation with lectures, cases, videos, in class and out of class activities, demonstrative exercises and real world simulations. In order to obtain the necessary internal synthesis of this diverse material into a coherent world view, it is imperative that you come to class prepared to discuss the readings and share your own insights. The course places a central emphasis on the key activities of developing self awareness, understanding through personal development planning, and reflective practice. Additionally the course provides students with the opportunity to engage in effective career planning through a range of exercises and activities. Students will develop knowledge and skills in relation to analyzing career paths, market place trends and researching, assessing and evaluating potential employment opportunities in their specific discipline. |
