Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is expand the student's typographic vocabulary through the use of time-based composition, sound and animation. The application of kinetic media will enable the typographic designer to add motion, scale change, sequence, metamorphosis, and context to typographic communication with the lead of typographic principles. Students will develop a time / movement-related projects using semantic typography with the objective of enhancing visual form, meaning and communication.

Course Content

This course covers various examples of various kinetic typography work and sources of inspiration. Revisits the 
"Hearing Type" lecture from the Typography class. The course also covers topics like basic animation principles, key frame animation, basics of cinematography, output formats. The course gives hands on practice on basic features of Adobe After Effects such as transform animation, key framing, 3D layer, using camera and effects.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introducing the first project, examples of various kinetic typography work and sources of inpiration. 
Hearing type lecture revisited. PRJ 01: Introducing project, sketches, working on styleframes. For the end of the next week’s session, you should hand in the storyboard. None
2) Basic animation principles. Keyframe animation. Introduction to Adobe After Effects PRJ 01: Working on and critising storyboard. From your storyboard, starting in Adobe AfterEffects process of creating the video; as animatics. Completed style frames. Process for storyboard.
3) Basic features of Adobe After Effects: Transform animation, keyframing PRJ 01: Animatics and video production. For next week, the video should be finished. Completed storyboard
4) Critique & evaluation. PRJ 01/02: Hand-in and critique on works. Introduction to the new project. Sketches. For next week you should bring in style frames. Also bring in examples of similar work. Completed Style frames, Storyboard and final video of the 2st project
5) Basics of Cinematography PRJ 02: Working on styleframes. For the end of the next week’s session, you should hand in the storyboard. Ideas, sketches and style frames for the 2nd project
6) Adobe After Effects temel özellikler; 3D layer ve Kamera PRJ 02: Storyboard kritiği ve çalışma Storyboard for the 2nd project
7) Output Formats PRJ 02: Animatics and video production. For next week, the video should be finished. Animatics for the 2nd project
8) Critique & evaluation. PRJ 02/03: Hand-in and critique. Intro to the new project. Sketches. For next week you should bring in audio examples of your choice to work on. Also bring in examples of similar work. Final video for the 2nd project
9) Working on projects. Crass course if necessary on individual process. PRJ 03: Working on styleframes. For the end of the next week’s session, you should hand in some amount of the storyboard. Ideas, sketches and style frames for the 3rd project
10) Working on projects. Crass course if necessary on indevidual process. PRJ 03: Working on and critising storyboard. From your storyboard, starting in Adobe AfterEffects process of creating the video; as animatics. Storyboard for the 3rd project
