Course Objectives: This course gives a broad outline of the basic structures and topics of Europeanization, European culture and identity as they have been constructed throughout history. It is an introduction to the different historical constructions of 'Europe' with their ramifications for the global order from the early Middle Ages to our times. The course also sheds light on the notions of feudalism, democratization and enlightenment, which are essential componenets of the European political culture.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
Students will be able to understand the major debates on European identity in their historicity;
Students will be able to relate these debates to major European philosophers who have in history articulated views on 'Europe', Europeanization and a 'European' political order;
Students will be able to explain the ways in which different 'Europe's in history led in turn to certain visions of the East, which also had significant political and economic ramifications;
Students will be able to analyse how current debates on Europeanization and European identity relate to the EU as a political entity;
The students are also expected to generate an interculturalist approach in understanding those with different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
