Course Objectives: In this course we will analyze and question the ways of cinema’s depictions of the cities and also see how images suggest and indicate underlying assumptions and their relationship to historical and cultural phenomenon.

While doing these we also aim at exploring urban questions from the perspective of different disciplines – film studies, urban sociology, urban geography, cultural studies, as well as political philosophy.

In our interrogative study of film and urban space, production processes of urban spaces and spatial practices, architectural distinctiveness, diversity, and dynamism of cities are studied in relation with social, cultural and political aspects together with the cinema’s forms of representations.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
The films of the new arrivals are studied as a ground for a “creative understanding” as they open a new space for “dialogic encounters” and “alternative public spheres”, for their cinematic time and space offer dynamic reservoir for possibilities to third, social, and carnivalesque spaces. We have the opportunity to comprehend the chronotopes of 90s and after, and follow up the differences and similarities.

Course Content

The course focuses on the Turkey’s Cinema of last two decades. I think these new arrivals’ cinema is based on the horizons of all diverse forms of survival, struggle, resistance, and negotiation experiences of everyday life. They are coming from the experiences of the other side and telling the stories of morphing encounters and habitations and of the passengers who do stand by for some time and/or coexist simultaneously.
