Course Objectives: | Sustainable development is only possible if economic welfare is supported by social welfare. As change agents, social entrepreneurs develop innovative solutions to societal problems through different combinations of production factors. Thereby, social entrepreneurs have a significant place in the realization of sustainable development. In this course, the concept of social entrepreneurship and social business models will be analyzed. Theory based sessions will be supported by case studies and guest speakers from Turkish social entrepreneurship ecosystem in order to sythesize theoretical and practical knowledge. Within the context of the course, the students are expected to participate to the dicussions and prepare a social enterprise project. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; 1.Understanding the importance of social entrepreneurship for sustainable development 2.Learning the basic principles and theories of social entrepreneurship 3.Understanding the dynamics in the social entrepreneurship ecosystem 4. Learning the main features of the social innovation-based business model through realizing common and distinctive features compared with the traditional business model 5. Recognizing the entrepreneurial potential that will make a difference by meeting with social entrepreneurs 6.Designing a business model for a social enterprise |
Sustainable development is realized when innovative products and processes reach every segment of the society and the created value is shared by everyone without leaving noone behind. Within this perspective, defining and making social entrepreneurship known by everyone is crucial for societies. The topics of this course include entrepreneurship, social innovation and the characteristics, history and related theories of social entrepreneurship. Additionally, the basic features of social enterprises and features that differentiate them from traditional business models will be discussed, and social enterprise examples from Turkey and other countries will be analyzed. Also, financing and impact measurement of social enterprises will be discussed. At the end of the semester, students will be expected to develop a business model for a social enterprise that is oriented for developing solutions to a social problem. |
