Course Objectives: | The focus of the course is to introduce and explore the pre-production, production and post-production processes and techniques for documentary film production. Students will have the opportunity to practice advanced research techniques and pre-production methods. At the end of the semester, final films will be screened at a prestigious venue in Istanbul. Selected films might compete in national and international documentary film festivals. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; Students will develop research skills to study the subject for a documentary project and they will explore different approaches to making a documentary film. |
Week Topic Commands, Homeworks & Exams 1  Orientation    2 Pre-production: Research, Concept Development Students will be introduced to the research methods and the basic elements of writing the conceptual framework of a documentary film project. Assignment: Students will write a short documentary film proposal. 3   Introduction to the different approaches to making a documentary film. Students will be introduced to the various examples of documentary films. 4 Research, writing the synopsis, treatment, script and the storyboard for a documentary film. Students will learn the methods of writing the synopsis, treatment and the script for a documentary film project. 5  Exploring, shooting, recording and editing Feedback Students will shoot and evaluate the footage to prepare for finalizing their documentary projects. 6  Production Planning Interview Techniques Shooting Students will learn interview techniques and restructure their projects. 7   MID-TERM Students will present their ideas, scripts, storyboards, and edited documentary projects. 8 Shooting, recording sound and editing video & audio for a documentary film Students will record the narrations, the sounds and collect the selection of sound tracks for their projects. 9  Evaluation of the rough cuts Students will screen their rough cuts of their documentary film projects. 10 Post-Production: Editing Students will edit their documentary film projects. 11   Mixing Sound Students will be introduced to the sound mixing techniques. 12 Titling, Subtitling, Inter- titling, Special Effects and Color-Correction Students will learn to work with the typography and aesthetic elements regarding texts, etc. 13  Copyright, Distribution, TV & Festivals  Students will be introduced to laws and rules about national and international copyrights, distribution and financial possibilities of production, co- production and distribution 14 Final Screenings  Presentıon of Documentary Films |
