Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to learn the basics of biochemistry, and to learn about the biochemical approaches of dentistry applications at the molecular level.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to do the following.

1. To define basic biochemistry information
2. To explain and describe the digestion of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates and related pathologies
3. Defines the metabolic pathways in human metabolism that connect carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids and allow these groups to transform into each other, names the hormones that regulate these conversions
4. Name and explain the biochemical processes and special adaptations of the connective tissues.
5. Name and explain biochemical processes that provide oral and dental health.

Course Content

Introduction to biochemistry, acids, bases, buffers, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, hemoglobin, plasma proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and coenzymes, nucleic acids, minerals, hormones, digestion and absorption, amino acid and protein metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, Krebs cycle and electron transport system, pentose phosphate pathway, glycogen metabolism, lipid metabolism, fatty acids, triglyceride and phospholipid metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, lipoproteins, connective tissue biochemistry, biochemistry of body fluids, biochemistry of tooth, cartilage and bone tissue, calcium, phosphate, vitamin D metabolism and diseases, acid-base balance
