Course Objectives: | With a brief history of 16 years, the non-fleeting internet radio, the podcast can also be defined as audio packages/series available online and on mobile.The genre is on platforms including the New York Times, the BBC, Spotify, Microsoft with hosts including anyone from Nilay Örnek to Mark Zuckerberg. Despite global interest and investment in the novel format, it’s unfortunately under-appreciated and misunderstood in Turkey. The objective of this class is to introduce the relatively new audio storytelling, to demonstrate the theory and practice and to raise new, fresh and world-class podcasts and broadcasters. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; The students who have succeeded in this course are able to; 1) understand and identify a podcast as a communication medium, 2) identify the advantages of podcasts over other media, as well as their limitations, 3) critically analyze the technical structure and audio editing of a podcast, as well as its content, 4) determine the theme, format, audience, revenue model and equipment needed for a podcast episode, 5) prepare a podcast episode, record it and distribute it on their own or in a group, 6) analyze viewing data of a released podcast episode. |
This course will include theoretical reading and practice about how the podcast is used by journalists and other branches of media, as well as practice and discussion. As a deliverable, students will prepare and release a pilot of a podcast. This class will instruct students on determining the topic, theme and audience of a podcast, as well as the post-production process and the episode’s release through podcast platforms including but not limited to Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and the analysis of the viewing data. The class will offer industry knowledge in an applied setting, where it will be accompanied by academic and market discussions.Students are expected to show active participation and attendance. The class is designed to be carried out both in person and/or online. |
