Course Objectives: The main objective of the course is to give vision on art directing in a film and general information about art directing.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Have general knowledge about the definition and history of art directing
2) Have knowledge about the functions of colors, decor and costume in a film
3) Will be able to create a budget list according to the scenario of a film
4) Will be able to list the decor and costumes for a film.
5) Have knowledge about the importance of dramaturgy for art directing
6)Will see how design elements enhance story theme, character, plot, tone, location, period, cinematography, editing, and visual effects.
7) Will learn budgeting and scheduling
8) Have knowladge about Art Department: the staff, their responsibilities and relationships both intra-departmentally and with the other crafts and departments.

Course Content

In this course, art direction, its definition, basic concepts and elements will be discussed. The content of this course is for the student; to teach the application methods related to different make-up techniques and to gain qualifications.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

1) What is Art Direction?
2) The psychological codes of colors and their effect on decor and costumes.
3) Cinema and architecture. Sample film screening and discussion
4) The function of decor and costume in a film
5) The function of makeup in a film
6) Special effect make up (Aging, Burn, Wound Make-up)
7) Film screening and class discussion
8) Examining the decor-costume and budget list for the film watched on the 7th week.
9) Decor-costume list will be made in class for the film watched on the 7th week
10) What is dramaturgy?
11) The importance of dramaturgy in art directing
12) The bond with character and the props
13) Film screening
14) Discussion on the practice of art directing; determination of decor, costumes and accessories. Film and photo shooting practice
