Course Objectives: A main objective of business education is to equip the students with the cognitive competencies that would help manage an organization considering all its functions. In addition, sustainable competitive advantage for a company is a consequence of successfully managing the company considering the industry/market dynamics. The aim of this course is to provide the students with the opportunity to run a company with all its functions in a market through a business simulation. This will help students gain required skills to manage a company through experiential learning, which would better prepare them for business life.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
Upon completing the course successfully, you will:

• Develop a level of comfort with the complexity of running a successful business through practicing your capacity to think strategically about a company: its current position, its future direction, its resources and competitive capabilities and its opportunities for gaining sustainable competitive advantage
• Use your skills and knowledge in conducting strategic analyses in a simulated competitive environment thus, develop awareness of own risk preferences and response to team dynamics
• Gain experience in crafting business strategy, reasoning about strategic options, analyzing action alternatives and making strategically sound decisions and distinguish between decision-making methods that succeed or fail
• Gain confidence in functioning effectively as part of a company's strategic management team through acquaintance with the managerial tasks associated with implementing and executing strategies
• Integrate the knowledge acquired in core courses of the business administration curriculum, including accounting, finance, marketing, production, and human resource management; and see how the different pieces of the puzzle fit and need to be managed successfully to achieve a corporate harmony
• Determine own capabilities in the diagnosis of business problems
• Measure and explain the level of success in a business function
• Identify and assess individual/team skills and influence performance accordingly
• Communicate your ideas and principles coherently with reasoning to your audience through oral and written media.

Course Content

In this course, students will be using the knowledge they gained throughout their undergraduate education on the functions of a business and the market, to come up with strategies and scenarios to manage their companies, as well as gain and sustain competitive advantage. For this purpose, the students will be using the knowledge they gained throughout their education including the business functions of finance, operations, marketing, logistics, human resources, and others. Thus, the first part of this course includes general information on strategic management covering the concepts and tools for external and internal environment analyses, business and corporate strategies. Next, through teams, students will start to learn how to use the simulation program and run their companies for a period of time in a simulated market. During the game, the teams will be competing with one another. Through this experience, they will learn to be effective team players, analyze the market and the external and internal environment to develop strategies and tactics for competition, try to focus on cross functional alignment and sustain competitive advantage in the market. The course explores the ways to formulate, implement and evaluate decisions that determine the future direction of the organizations. By the end of the course, you are expected to understand how different parts of the big picture blend to add to the performance of a company through a simulation experience. You will also be able to differentiate good business and corporate strategies from weak ones.
