Course Objectives: The objective of this course is, on the one hand, to deepen students’ ability of analysing the key processes and research in the area of social movements and collective behavior, and, on the other, to provide them with tools for their own effective participation in civil society and implementing social change.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
Students that succeed in this course will be able to:
1)Identify the key characteristics of social movements and differentiate them from other forms of political activity
2)Describe the factors for the emergence of social movements
3)Explain the factors influencing participation in social movements
4)Describe the phases in the evolution of a social movement
5)Develop the analytical and interviewing skills by applying course material to the analysis of a local social movement
6)Describe the possible outcomes of social movements
7)Apply course materials to the analysis of case studies in Turkey
8)Explain the globalization processes in relation to social movements
9)Explain the factors leading to the emergence of radical social movements
10)Develop critical and presentation / speaking skills through in-class assignments and field trips.

Course Content

The course will introduce social movements and collective behavior as constituent elements of life in society and as mechanisms of social transformation. The course will explore different theoretical perspectives on social movements as well as the issues of the emergence of social movements, participation, organizational dynamics, obstacles, and criteria for success. These perspectives will be applied to the analysis of old and new social movements in Turkey and in the global context.
