Course Objectives: In this course the students will examine the key laws, regulations and regulating bodies that govern and restrict the media and publishing practice. They will analyze the legal system, take a closer look at how laws are made. Furthermore, they will assess the role of courts and the parliament in relation to media and publishing. They will also discuss self-regulation and its impact on media practice.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Critically discuss the concepts related with freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
2) Report on legal issues.
3) Explain privacy law, broadcasting law and intellectual property and the laws of defamation.
4) Compare the different roles of courts and regulatory bodies in relation to media practices.
5) Evaluate the role and impact of self-regulation on media and journalists.
6) Critically analyze the legal and regulatory restrictions on freedom of expression and their impact on media practice.

Course Content

The course focuses on freedom of expression in digital age. The course will discuss defamation, access to information, breach of privacy, internet bans, freedom of expression, freedom of press and confidentiality.
