Course Objectives: This course is an elective course which aims at investigating the use of English for mass communication in general. The students will be familiarized with 1. the different types of mass communication, 2. how English is used for mass communication. 3. How to analyze language used in mass communication and 4. How to write for mass communication.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to; - Recognize the discipline jargon and define the related terms - Name the disciplines that aid to explain English for mass communication ? recognize different types of mass communication tools- Compares and contrasts the differences and similarities in the use of English in various types of mass communication in terms of language structure and register
2. Name the hypotheses and theories of mass communication and compare them ? Name, analyse, and find the main ideas in editorial letters, news items and columns- Write brief news items, headlines, editorial letters and advertisements by applying what they have learnt about the use of English for mass communication

Course Content

Students will be familiarized with published and online mass communication tools such as newspapers, and magazines; they will recognize the features of language used in mass communication and also they will be able to apply this knowledge in their writing; they will be able to analyse and critically evaluate editorial letters, articles and columns; they will be able to understand the validity and reliability of the news items and articles in mass communication; they will be able to write brief news items, headlines, advertisements, editorial letters by using the language features used in mass communication; and they will also be able to analyse how the target language is used to reflect its own cultural properties by looking into real life samples.
