Course Objectives: This course aims to enhance prospective ESL/EFL teachers’ understanding of English Grammar within the structural framework, and expand their skills in linguistic analysis through lexical and syntactic classifications. Along with the morphology and syntax level of English, this course includes an analysis of how morphology and syntax are utilized for certain discourse purposes at the suprasentential level.

Upon the successful completion of the present course, you should be able to…

• identify various parts of speech through structural signals;
• understand the relation between language structures and lexical items;
• define the major syntactic structures of the English language;
• produce grammatically correct sentences using different phrase structures
• identify various types of speech in an academic context;
• recognize various types of utterances in conversation;

Course Content

This course will be learner centered that depends on guided discovery and cooperative learning strategies. The course will be based on two components. The first component focuses more on the structural analysis with whole class discussions, while the second one heavily focuses on the meaning of the structure in contextual analysis sessions by pair/group works.
