Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to learn family culture, to have knowledge about the family and the child in Turkish culture from the past until now, to examine the change of childhood experience in Turkish culture; to discuss about the relationship between the child and the community within socio-cultural context. Furthermore, this course aims to provide a critical point of view for early childhood educators on how to conceptualize childhood.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
-explain the basic concepts and theories related to the family and child
-have knowledge family and child in Turkish culture in the past and now
-realize different point of view on childhood
-have a general knowledge about the impact of community, culture and family on childhood

Course Content

Turkish family structure; raising and value of children in different Turkish states; family culture, traditions and customs in Anatolia; interaction between large family and nuclear family; marriage ceremonies, funeral ceremonies; the role and tasks of a collective cultural family counselor.
