Course Objectives: •Have encountered a wide variety of primary documents, as well as scholarship and popular writing about childhood.
•Practice asking questions of shared class documents.
•student learn how to ask questions about a primary source, to use library databases for historical research, and to write for an online audience.
•Think historically about their own cultural experience, critically re-encountering the culture of their own youth.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
At the end of the course: 1. Students will become more reflective and aware of the role of mass media and digital technology in the role it plays for children and family. 2. Students will acquire an understanding about the marketing and economics of children’s media, including the work of those who create apps for children, websites, music, movies, television, marketing, games such as Mario ,and the Internet in general; 3. Students will acquire an understanding of communication policy issues concerning children; 4. Students will gain insight about the cognitive, social and emotional aspects of children’s media and technology use as well as understand the role it has on shaping and influencing children. 5. Students will read recent research/scholarship and strengthen their critical and analytical skills as well as improve upon their research skills. 6. Students will be exposed to diverse research paradigms in regards to media for children and they will develop skills and strategies for evaluating research in this area. 7. Students will be able to write their own blog pages related with various topics of media and children. 8. Students will be able to create a survey related with the media use of children. 9. Students will be able to analyse the results of the survey and write articles/news based on the results of the survey on children and media.

Course Content

This course will look at the development of popular culture and media associated with children. Using cultural objects made for and by children and youth literature, advertising, websites, video games, films, television shows, and toys. We will also look at how culture and media relates to the bigger social questions and movements as well as influences that it may have on children.
