Course Objectives: Computers are everywhere as an essential part of modern life. In the 21st century digital age, it is becoming increasingly obvious that fundamental mathematical theories and efficient computer science algorithms are finding new applications in technology. Some areas of application are software engineering, computer logic, and analysis of algorithms, telecommunication, and cryptology. Before new applications and technologies can be of use, there is a need for advanced mathematical knowledge in the background for the use of computer and technology. This course offers the opportunity to combine mathematical reasoning with an understanding of computing. This new course focuses on several dominant themes in this context. Topics to be covered include: discrete mathematics, sets, relations, logic and propositions, mathematical induction and deduction, graphs, number theory, tree structures and hierarchy, matrices, set theory, probability and permutations and combinations.
