Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to provide participants with a holistic and systematic knowledge of European political history. Another aim of the course is to provide students with the ability to analyze the basic facts and concepts of political science and international relations by placing them in a historical framework.

Ability to synthesize weekly political history topics at the end of the semester

Course Content

The course provides students with information from before the French Revolution in 1789 to World War II. It is designed to provide basic information on the historical developments in domestic and foreign policy in the period extending to the end of World War II. The course also aims to provide information on the social and economic foundations of these political developments. In this context, XIX. The narrative, which will proceed through the basic political events and facts of the century, will be supported by information on the social, economic and ideological structures of the period.

2) Discovery of new continents and restructuring of European social and political life
3) The rise of France: the end of the civil war, the recovery of France, the Thirty Years' War as the first secular war, and the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) as the first secular peace, XIV. Louis and his reforms
4) The War of Spanish Succession and the rise of England: The struggle for influence in North America and the American Revolution
5) French Revolution: causes, consequences, Napoleonic wars and the Vienna Regulations of 1815
6) Period of revolutions in Europe: Revolutions of 1830 and 1848, Industrial Revolution and its consequences
7) Midterm
8) The establishment of the national unions of Italy and Germany & the road to the First World War; causes, wars and consequences
9) Post-World War I Europe and peace treaties: Versailles, Saint-Germain, Trianon, etc. Comparisons with Lausanne.
10) Weimer period and coup attempts in Germany
11) The Locarno period and its aftermath: Hitler's rise and rise to power & Hitler's foreign policy aims and international developments
12) World War II and its aftermath: Establishment of the UN, Cold War
