Course Objectives: • To present image representations widely used in medical imaging.
• To teach the functions of the major image processing techniques.
• To show the results of image processing for selected applications of medical imaging.

1) Image representation, pixels and voxels, algebraic image operations
2) Gray scale and color representation
3) Image file formats, DICOM
4) Image quality and the signal-to-noise ratio
5) Operations in intensity space
6) The intensity transform function and the dynamic range
7) Windowing, histograms and histogram operations
8) Filtering and transformations, smoothing and sharpening operations
9) Differentiation and edge detection
10) The segmentation problem and Region of Interest (ROI) definition
11) Thresholding, region growing
12) Spatial transforms, discretization – resolution and artifacts, interpolation and volume regularization
13) Translation and rotation, rotation in 2D – some properties of the rotation matrix
14) Rotation and translation in 3D
