Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, awareness, and skills necessary to gain an understanding of and begin to use counseling techniques that are essential in helping relationships with children. In addition, students will be challenged to examine issues that may impact their effectiveness as counselors with children and adolescents with a focus upon the importance of counselor self-awareness and self-reflection. Ethical guidelines, historical development of the field, research findings and trends, and standards of practice are also explored.

1) Learn the professional procedures for initiating and maintaining a counseling relationship.
2) Learn your legal and ethical responsibilities regarding the counseling relationship.
3) Learn a variety of counseling techniques and the typical problems they are used to treat.
4) Develop a conceptual understanding of the processes underlying interpersonal, emotional, and cognitive change in children.
5) Review and conduct research about counselingh with children.
6) Learn the role of parents and how to receive their contribution in counseling with children
