Course Objectives: To train nurses who have to have the ability to integrate the basic knowledge and
principles received during training with roles and functions relating to newborn
health and disease, and to apply the knowledge to the healthy/patient newborns and their families in every step of the health care system.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1 Knows the prentive health services in Turkey and role of preventive health services for newborn health
2 Knows professional roles, ethical and legal responsibilities in the field of neonatal nursing and performs
3 Knows the organization of the neonatal intensive care units, can provide necessary transport of the newborn
4 Teaches self-care to families. Adopts a holistic approach to family relations, and uses the neonatal nursing process. Knows primary care and family-centered care, applies
5 Defines normal and high-risk newborn infant and the newborn with congenital defect. And performs nursing care.
6 Comprehends the content of the patient and family education. Teaches home care to family. Supports the family in implementing the decisions for the solution of health problems
7 Knows the organization of the neonatal intensive care units, if needs, can provide necessary transport of the newborn

Course Content

Normal newborn characteristics, premature that forming a high-risk newborns,
Postmature, gestational age newborn large-small, high-risk newborns with systemic-genetic-metabolic diseases, and care advice for parents

1) Newborn nursing in the world and our country
2) Organization of the neonatal intensive care units and neonatal transport
3) Ethics in neonatal nursing
4) Normal and high risk newborn, care after the first day, the maintenance, preparation of discharge.
5) Newborn with congenital defect, newborn with a genetic disorder
6) Adaptation to life outside the uterus of the newborn, assessment, newborn resuscitation
7) Newborn care (temperature control, fluid-electrolyte balance, nutrition, hospital infection control)
8) Midterm exam
9) Principles of drug therapy in the newborn / neonatal screening
10) Respiratory system diseases of the newborn / disorders of the newborn heart
11) Neurological disease of the newborn
12) Metabolic problems of the newborn / neonatal gastrointestinal diseases
13) Urinary tract diseases of the newborn / neonate skin diseases
14) Evaluation of course
