Course Objectives: This course emphasizes the essential concepts associated with business practices and ethical values that prevail for the most effective and successful global leaders. Course objectives include recognizing your own viewpoint and its implications for decision making; appreciating the value inherent in the viewpoints and decision making of others; distinguishing differences in ethical foundations around the globe; identifying the pitfalls of human decision making and their effects in organizations; recognizing the fit between your values and those of an organization.

1. Understand the global leadership perspective with its challenges and teach a global mindset
2. Gain an analytical and conceptual understanding of one’s own culture and the differences from own versus other cultures
3. Learn to recognize when cultural differences are affecting work relationships and the circumstances in which cultural differences are most likely
4. Learn substantively about and come to appreciate cultures different from one’s own
5. Understand the typical reactions to cultural differences, learn to be mindful of those reactions in ourselves, and learn strategies for responding productively and positively to cultural differences

Course Content

The course is designed to provide concepts governing leadership by focusing on what it means to be a good leader. Emphasis in the course is on the practice of leadership. The course will examine topics such as: the nature of leadership, recognizing leadership traits, developing leadership skills, creating a vision, listening to out-group members, handling conflict, overcoming obstacles, and addressing ethics in leadership. Attention will be given to helping students to understand and improve their own leadership potential.
