Course Objectives: Broad overview of bioinformatics with a significant problem-solving component, including hands-on practice using computational algorithms to solve a variety of biological problems (i.e., protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions)

-are expected to gain an understanding of the importance of bioinformatic approaches in modern biological research.
-are expected to know and apply databanks used in bioinformatics.
-are expected to use basic algorithms and softwares in bioinformatics field.
-are expected to follow scientific articles at the field of bioinformatics.

-What is bioinformatics?
-Alignment of pairs of sequences: Overview of methods
-Alignment of pairs of sequences: Dynamic programming
-Alignment of pairs of sequences: Substitution matrices and parameter choice
-Statistical analysis of alignments: Overview of statistical issues
-Multiple sequence alignment
-Database searching: Overview of FASTA and BLAST
-Predicting protein secondary structure
-Predicting protein tertiary structure
