Course Objectives: This seminar aims to function as a research studio where urban and architectural analysis of selected sites in Istanbul are primarily based on historical reconstruction of these sites and their morphological, social and ethnographic structures. In the early 21st century, when the city of Istanbul is highly endangered under the current changes in urban renewal and reconstruction, students will be encouraged to develop an in-depth analysis of modern urbanism and architecture with a focus on selected buildings' lifespan throughout 20th century. During the course, students will compare the case studies undertaken in Istanbul to other sites and situations in various cities around the world.

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. develop a critical approach to urban and architectural analysis
II. explore new ways in implementing urban renewal projects in historic sites and neighbourhoods
III. compare the implementations in Istanbul to other cities around the world
IV. examine the impacts of urban transformations on the social and ethnographic structures
V. comprehend urban history as a cumulative regeneration process that is organically connected to current themes of contemporary urbanism and architecture.

Course Content

This course aims the study, analysis and documentation of 20th century modern architecture in Istanbul with the understanding of history as cultural history, archeology and ethnography. The seminar functions as a research studio where the analysis of design is primarily undertaken as a historical reconstruction of the design process and of the building’s lifespan. By the way of historical survey, artifacts of cultural memory and interviews, selected buildings that represent the iconic and ordinary modern architecture in Istanbul are subject to in-depth analysis in relation to current themes of contemporary urbanism and architecture in Istanbul.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Students are required to complete specific readings assigned each week. Critical and in-depth review of these readings will form the basis of class discussions on each week's topic. As part of final project, each student will be asked to select a specific site in Istanbul and to conduct a field research throughout the course.
