Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to understand how İstanbul evolved from its early centuries as a Greek colony and Roman town, to its unique role as the imperial capital of both the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires, to its latest distinction as a European Cultural Capital of 2010 and to discover Istanbul’s vaunted history that spans over two and a half millennia.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. Students who are taking this course will define Istanbul’s ancient and modern urban fabric that will serve as the foundation for our investigation of the ways in which Istanbul's past have been physically memorialized, narrated, and incorporated into the urban landscape.
II. Students will learn how to consider the city from a horizontal perspective by first mapping existing monuments in relationship to one another and considering the impact of the past on the current experiences of the modern city’s space.
III. They will map the city from a vertical perspective, addressing what is preserved, reused, or destroyed at pivotal historical moments, and exploring how the physical space at that moment reflects the changing identity of the city.

Course Content

Over the course of this program, we will visit monuments/sites of utmost importance for the history of the city, we will hear hear lectures by the specialists in their fields, visit the architects in their workspace to hear about their design aspirations and ongoing projects. We will conclude our course with a worskhop led by a group of Istanbul-based architects to discuss the character and context of the large-scale construction and urban design projects that they are running in Istanbul.
